Welcome to Men’s Leadership, God’s Way. I’m your host. Don Wood. This is the place where men learn to lead with faith, clarity and conviction. Together, we’ll explore real stories and biblical principles to help you be a model of integrity in your work, family and everyday life. Let’s get started.
Don Wood: Welcome back, guys. So last time, we talked about the hidden struggles of leadership. These are the things that we often carry in silence, intense stress, constant pressure, loneliness, and endless temptation. And if you remember, I said this, we don’t have to keep carrying all these things alone. So if we’re going to lead differently, we need a strong foundation in our life. Because as you know, a house that’s built on sand will collapse in the storm. And one that’s built on the rock will survive anything that comes its way.
So today, what I want to do is share with you the 4 Foundations of Godly Leadership, and here they are. The first one is this, your identity in Christ. The second one is your character over image. The third is your dependence on God. And the fourth is your service before your status. Now, guys, these aren’t just quick tips or leadership hacks. These are deep biblical anchors that’re going to hold you steady when everything else in your life is shaken up.
So to begin, let’s go into more depth about the first foundation, which is your Identity in Christ. Now this is all about who you are before what you do. I love it when someone approaches me and they ask, well, what do you do? And my response is about, what? Because very often, our identity is in our titles or our roles rather than who we are. And God wants you to remember that you belong to Him, and that your image is in Christ rather than in the world. In the book of 1 Peter 2:9, it says, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, God’s special possession.” But the world says that your identity is in your performance, or your job title, or how much money you’re making, or the influence you have over the people that you lead. But God says, “Your identity is in your belonging. You are God’s son before you’re anyone’s leader.” In the book of Exodus 3, there’s the story of Moses. And God went to Moses and said, “I want you to lead the people out of captivity.” And Moses said, are you kidding me? I’m not qualified. I can’t speak. I’m not a leader. But God had to tell him, Moses, I’m going to be with you, and all I want you to do is just be quiet and go. I won’t leave you. I won’t forsake you. But Moses didn’t think he was qualified. But God had to remind him that identity is not based on ability, but on God’s presence in your life.
There was a season after my surgeries where I couldn’t work, I wasn’t productive, I couldn’t provide in the way I thought I should with my family, and my self worth was shattered. But I remember God whispering to me, Don, your worth isn’t in what you do, it’s in who I say you are. And you know what guys? That truth carried me through a very difficult, discouraging, doubtful season in my life. Think about the CEO’s who lose their jobs. And suddenly, we read about how they spiral into depression. And why is that? Well, because their identity was tied to the role that they had. But the leaders who know who they are never crumble when titles or rules change. When you get a chance, I want you to write this down, what lies have I believed about my identity as a leader? What I want you to do is go to Google or Chat GPT and say, this is a lie I have about leadership, what does the Bible say about this? And you’ll get truth from scripture, guys.
Now, the second foundation is your character over your image. This is all about who you are when no one is looking. In the book of 1 Samuel 16:7, watch this. Here’s what it says, “People look at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at your heart.” I think the biggest misconception about walking in Christ is that God is always paying attention to all of your mistakes. But you know what? God is more interested in your heart than he is in your behavior. Because if you get to have a close relationship with Him and your heart gets close to God, then the behavior will follow. But here’s what we get in the world. The world will celebrate your outward appearance, your charisma. But God is more interested in your character. An image might get you into a position, but it’s the only character that will keep you there.
Look at King Saul in the Bible. Here’s a guy that was tall. He was impressive, but the problem with him is that he was very image driven. But when the pressure came in his life, he cut corners and he lost God’s favor. There was David. Here’s the guy that killed the giant with a slingshot. He wasn’t perfect, but he was a man after God’s own heart. And here’s the thing guys, I want you to listen to this carefully, his private devotion, his meditation time, he spent the first hour every day of his life with God sustained him in his public calling. And then there was Daniel. He was a guy who lived in integrity in Babylon. He prayed three times a day. And guess what happened? There was a law that prohibited prayer, but he kept praying anyway. And guess where he found himself? In the lion’s den. And instead of looking at his circumstances of being in there with the lions, he looked upward towards the light that was peering through the den. And it was God’s strength that sustained him in that circumstance, just as God will sustain you in anything that comes your way. And guess what? The Lions did nothing, and Daniel was triumphant.
I remember a time where I was more concerned about how I looked as a leader than actually being one. I tried to look strong in public, but I would go home exhausted, irritable, disconnected, feeling like I was an imposter. And I got to tell you, that gap between my image and reality, it nearly broke me. If you think about it, how many leaders in business, or politics and ministry have fallen not because they lacked the skills, but they lacked the character? So remember this, guys, your image will fade, but it’s your integrity that’s going to last, and what people will remember about you. So ask yourself this question this week, what’s one area of my private life that needs to match my public life? Go to God about it, and ask him to give you the strength to make changes in your life, where what you say and what you do will match.
Now, the third foundation is your dependence on God. This is actually where you have the most strength when you surrender to God. In John 15:5, it says, “I am the vine. You are the branch. Apart from me, you can do nothing.” I want you to remember these guys, self reliance is the greatest leadership trap. Dependence isn’t weakness, it’s actually wisdom. The apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 1:9, this happened to me that we might not rely on ourselves, but on God. There was the prophet Elijah where he had the battle for the Lord, and he was victorious, and then he ran off, and he was in this period of great depression. He was hiding underneath the tree, and God sustained him. God came to him and gave him food and rest, and reminded him that his dependence will fuel his mission in life. And guys, your dependence on the Lord will fuel your leadership. Look at Jesus. Jesus, the Son of God, even had to withdraw and pray. He had to say to the disciples, guys, I need a break. I need to be alone, and I need to pray to my heavenly Father. And that shows us that leadership flows from dependence on God, not independence with ourselves.
***Hey, guys, you ever feel like you’re leading on the outside but running empty on the inside? Hi, I’m Don Wood, Founder of Men’s Leadership, God’s Way. I work one on one with executives and leaders who are ready to trade burn out confusion and isolation for clarity, confidence and peace. My coaching is designed to help you to lead with conviction without sacrificing your health, faith or family. So if you’re ready to experience the transformation you’ve been searching for, visit mensleadershipgodsway.com, and let’s start your journey today.
My battle with alcoholism taught me all about dependence. I tried to manage it all about myself. I remember that I would take a shower, hung over at 8:00 o’clock in the morning, and I would promise myself, today’s the day. Today’s the day I’m going to begin my walk with sobriety. But by 5:00 o’clock, there I was at happy hour with a beer in my hand. And I thought, this is all about my discipline, my strength, my willpower. I’m weak right now, and I’ve got to learn to become strong. But you know what happened? I finally came to the end of myself. I came to Christ because of my complete and utter defeat, and trying to battle with drugs and alcohol. And I got to tell you, it was something that was an embarrassing time in my life. I came to the end of everything. I lost my job, I lost my relationship with my girlfriend, I lost the respect of my friends. I was incarcerated. I had come to the end of myself. So it wasn’t inspiration that led me to Christ. It was desperation. I was a complete failure. But the breakthrough came the moment I admitted, God, I can’t do this anymore. I need your help. Lord, I want to get out of the driver’s seat. I’m going to sit in the passenger seat and enjoy the view of life. I know that when you take the wheel, you’re not going to screw up my life any more than I have. And when I learned that dependence with God, it was freedom for me.
Think about leaders who burn out because they refuse to rest or delegate. But true strength says that I need help. I need God. I need others in my life that will help me. They pray, Lord, show me the one area of my leadership where I’m still trying to control instead of surrendering this to you. Because actually, Lord, this is your business. This is everything I have in my life. I have it because of you. And if you doubt that, guys, then here’s what I want you to pray to God for. Say, God, I think I’ve created a lot in my life, so let’s make a deal. Everything that I’ve created in my life, I get to keep. And everything that you’ve created in my life, I want you to take away. Go ahead, say that prayer. I bet you, you won’t. Because deep down, you know inside that everything you have is a blessing and the gift from the one who created you, who’s more interested in your life than even you are, who has a plan for your life. And the stakes are high for God, and God wants us to step into obedience with him so that we go along the right path to maximize our legacy while we’re here.
Now, the fourth foundation is Your Service Before Your Status. And that means that you lead by serving others you know. In the book of Mark 10:43-45, it says, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant. For even the Son of Man, that’s Jesus who hung on the cross, did not come to be served, but to serve.” Now, the world will say your leadership is about your position. But Jesus says that leadership is about serving others, and the greatest leaders don’t ask. Well, how can people serve me, my organization and my plan? They’ll say, how can I serve them? Go to the book of John 13, we read about Jesus. Here he is at the Last Supper. And what is he doing? He’s washing the feet of his disciples. Here’s the Apostle Paul, second to Jesus and communicating the gospel throughout the world. Here, he is working as a tent maker so no one could accuse him of exploiting his ministry. That’s in the book of Acts 18.
I remember that I was working for a guy who never looked for recognition in every single meeting. He would ask me, Don, what can I do to make your job easier? What do you think about this situation? And that man had more influence in my life than he did. If he was chasing any kind of numbers that we were supposed to attain, or any type of recognition for the company, some of the most respected CEOs will eat in the cafeteria with their employees. They’ll learn their names, they’ll show up on the front lines. They’ll walk the halls and ask people, what would you do in this situation? And they get their ideas because they really value and respect their perspective on things.
So this week, ask yourself, who can you serve in a way that no one else will notice? If we think about it, foundation is invisible, but it’s essential. You don’t see a building’s foundation, but it determines everything above it. And your leadership will work the same way. Another thing to remember is this, the storms that come your way will reveal what’s hidden in your life. Jesus said that the house built on that stand will collapse in the storm. So a crisis is going to expose whether your leadership is built on your ego and your image. or on God. And remember this, you will reproduce what you build on. So if you lead from insecurity, you’re going to create insecure followers. But if you lead from service, you’re going to raise up servants.
So here are some things that you can ask yourself this week. What foundation am I strongest in? Is it my identity in Christ? Is it my character over my image? Is it my dependence on God? Or is it my service before my status? And which one of these needs the most attention right now? And how would your leadership change if you really lived from identity, character, dependence and service?
Here are some practical steps you can do this week. Here’s what I want you to do. I want you to write down one lie about your leadership identity and replace it with some truth. Next, I want you to confess one hidden character issue with God. Go to him about it, and ask him to give you the strength to walk through and correct this in your life. And then I want you to surrender one responsibility you’ve been trying to control. Delegate it to someone else. And then finally, I want you to choose one act of service this week that’s going to cost you something. And then I want you to go to Jesus, and I want you to have a conversation with him. I want you to ask him some questions. Ask him this, Jesus, how do you feel when I help other people out? Jesus, when I make a mistake, what do you like about helping me Jesus? What was a moment in my life where heaven admired my courage in leadership? Then finally, guys, ask Jesus this question, what great adventure can we go on together this week?
So guys, the 4 Foundations of Godly Leadership, identity in Christ, character over image, dependence on God, service before status. If you build your leadership on these, it’s not going to just survive. It’s going to thrive, even in the storms.
